Braces & Retainers
Metal or ceramic braces are used by your orthodontist to help you improve the look and feel of your smile. The amount of time spent in braces will vary depending on the individual patient, and can take anywhere between six and 30 months.
Self Ligating Braces
At Deerfoot Meadows, we use self ligating braces to give you your best smile. These braces offer:
- Reduced friction
- Quicker appointments
- More hygienic
- Greater comfort
Retainers
Teeth have a natural tendency to move back to their original positions over time. The lifetime wear of retainers is the only way to prevent shifting. Retainers are a custom-fitted device placed in the mouth after orthodontic treatment is complete to hold your teeth in their current position.
Early Intervention
While comprehensive orthodontic treatment usually begins during adolescence, some problems need to be addressed at an earlier age. By age 7, most children have a mix of baby teeth and adult teeth, making it easier for the orthodontist to diagnose and correct tooth and jaw problems sooner and without surgery.

Dentofacial Orthopedics
While orthodontics entails the management of tooth movement, dentofacial orthopedics involves the guidance of facial growth and development, which occurs largely during childhood. Appliances are frequently used — the more familiar braces for orthodontics, and other specialized appliances like headgear and expanders depending on what facial abnormalities are present. Sometimes orthopedic treatment may precede conventional braces, but often the two are used at the same time. Often, to get orthopedic change, appliances are frequently used. Depending on the facial abnormalities, specialized appliances such as facemask, expander or herbst can be used.
Our expertise in both orthodontics and dentofacial orthopedics allows us to diagnose any misalignments in the teeth and jaw as well as the facial structure, and can devise a treatment plan that integrates both orthodontic and dentofacial orthopedic treatments.
Carriere® Appliance
Benefits of Carriere®
- Comfortable
- Convenient
- Hygienic
- Discreet
- Flexible
How It Works
With an effect similar to headgear, but without the use of a bulky appliance, the Carriere® appliance corrects both overbites/overjets and underbites without removing permanent teeth.
Surgical Orthodontics
Considerations
The need for surgical orthodontics occurs when the jaws do not line up correctly, and a proper bite cannot be achieved with orthodontic treatment alone. Orthognathic surgery will help properly align the jaw, and orthodontic braces will then be used to move the teeth into their proper position.
How it works
Surgery is performed in a hospital and can take several hours depending on each case. After surgery and a two-week healing period, your orthodontist will fine-tune your bite with braces. After your braces are removed, a retainer will be required to help maintain your new smile.
Mouthguards
Mouthguards are coverings worn over teeth and are highly recommended to help cushion impact and protect your teeth and soft tissue from injury during impact sports.
Why Do I Need a Custom Mouthguard?
- Protects your teeth
- Protects the soft tissues in your mouth
- Reduces the risk facial fractures and/or concussions
- Better fit
Recommended Use
Mouthguards should be used by anyone that plays contact sports or recreational activities that might pose a risk of injury to the mouth. It can also protect the soft tissues in your mouth from dental appliances such as braces.
